Concept

Trust

Trust is the willingness to act on incomplete information because you believe the other party will behave well when you are not watching. Before brands, a buyer could not tell a good rivet from a bad one, so no one had reason to make good rivets, and ships sank. A name that can be praised or blamed in public is the mechanism that makes quality worth producing.

Why it matters

Every marketing act is a deposit or a withdrawal on trust. There is no neutral marketing. It is the only asset that compounds while you sleep, and the only one that, once spent cheaply, is slow and expensive to rebuild.

Common misconceptions

  • That trust is won in a single impressive moment. It is built by consistency over years and lost in an instant.
  • That trust and persuasion are the same thing. Persuasion moves someone now; trust makes them believe you later. Persuasion without trust is a loan repaid with interest.
  • That you can shortcut it with borrowed credibility. Borrowed trust always comes due.

How it connects

  • CredibilityCredibility is trust you can point at.
  • ReputationReputation is trust remembered by others.
  • SignallingSignals are how trust becomes legible under uncertainty.
  • PositioningA clear position is easier to trust than a vague one.
  • CommunityCommunity is trust extended between members, not just to you.
