Signalling
A signal is a costly, hard-to-fake indicator of an underlying quality. A storefront, a well-made bag, sustained visible effort: these are believable precisely because a fraud could not afford to send them. We read signals constantly because we cannot inspect everything directly.
Why it matters
Signals are how quality becomes legible under uncertainty. The only real question is whether a signal points at real substance or is used to replace it.
Common misconceptions
- That any signal will do. A signal with nothing behind it (a fake vent, a fake speaker driver) is a lie waiting to be found.
- That signalling is beneath serious work. It is unavoidable; the only choice is whether your signals are honest.
